Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I not access the desktop version of Word, Outlook, Excel etc...?
The MGH Institute students, faculty and staff receive access to the Microsoft Office suite of products through Mass General Brigham’s (MGB) licensing agreements with Microsoft. Recently, MGB has made changes to their licensing and the desktop version of Microsoft 365 will no longer be available for use.

Users have been converted to web-only access to Microsoft tools such as Outlook, Word and OneDrive.

Using Microsoft 365 is now as simple as logging into https://www.office.com with your MGB network credentials and using the applications from your browser.

For most, there will be no noticeable loss of functionality by using the web-based versions Microsoft products. Products like Outlook and Word, all behave similarly to their desktop versions. However, OneDrive storage capacity is limited to 2GB under this new licensing plan.

The MGB helpdesk has this entry on their Service Hub for more information on using Microsoft 365 Apps for the Web. (link is only accessible when connected to the network or VPNd in)
