Please note these instructions are NOT for IHP/MGB issued laptops or desktops.
If you have received a device from your employer these updates will happen automatically, and you do not need to continue.
1. Upgrade your device to Windows 10 or 11 Pro
MGH Institute and MGB policy is that windows devices run Windows 10 Professional or Windows 11 Professional. If you are on the “Home” edition of Windows, you will need to upgrade to the Pro version. The Windows Pro version is used to leverage Microsoft’s encryption software Bitlocker which isn’t available on “Home” edition.
To check your version of Windows, start by opening the settings app on your device by searching for it in the search bar along the bottom of the screen.
Choose “System”
Choose “About”
Look in the “Windows Specifications” section for information about your version of windows.
If you are on the Window 10 or 11 “Home” you will need to upgrade your device to Windows “Pro” to use your device within the IHP/MGB network.
Microsoft charges a one-time payment of $99 plus tax for the upgrade. This is not a subscription. You will only need to pay once. Please upgrade your device before you continue.
2. Turn on BitLocker to encrypt your device
IHP/MGB requires devices that are used for IHP/MGB related work and connected to the MGB phswifi3 network to be encrypted. On Windows, encryption is done by turning on BitLocker. BitLocker is built into Windows and not something you need to download.
In the search bar at the bottom of your screen type “Manage BitLocker”. Click on “Manage BitLocker” in the search results.
Click on “Turn on BitLocker”
Choose how you would like to save your BitLocker recovery key.
IMPORTANT: It is your responsibility to keep track of your BitLocker recovery key. Keep it somewhere safe where you won’t lose it. If you lose your recovery key, then it’s possible that all the data on your computer will be unrecoverable and lost forever.
Select “Encrypt used disk space only”
Select “New encryption mode”
Check “Run BitLocker system check” and click “Continue”
Click “continue” and you will be prompted to restart your device to complete the encryption.
